Today in the OD Network group on LinkedIn a question was asked about key findings in working virtually.
In my experience as a manager, business owner and virtual team member the following ten points have shown up time and time again.
Good virtual collaboration doesn't just happen but it needs working on and constant nurturing: 1) Goals, milestones and stakeholders have to be REALLY clear. 2) Expectations in terms of group process, responsibilities, feedback mechanisms have to be set up by the WHOLE group if possible. 3) A range of tools should be used to support the process. 4) Commitments to the schedule needs to agreed and carried out by all. 5) People need to have an awareness that not all people will use the tools to the same level / as quickly as other members. 6) Whilst a face to face meeting is great to get to know each other this can be done online or over a phone conference. 7) The group should review every so often the process & performance. 8) If possible someone should take on the role of facilitator / process leader AND it can be a group member if they have the skills required. 9) People should be aware of the cultural dimensions if working on an international project. 10) If you are having communication issues just pick up the phone and talk it through
Andi Roberts facilitates virtual teams and also runs virtual team building courses with teams to allow them get to know each other and lay the foundations for strong virtual team performance once they start working on their common project. Projects can be carried out in English or Spanish, globally or naturally, virtually. |

I am currently reading "Creativity at work" by DeGraff & Lawrence and I am really impressed by the practicality of the book. It provides some excellent theory and tools to help organisations be more innovative, several of which I will adding to my toolbox of innovation facilitation, training and coaching. One of the pieces I particularly liked was the mnemonic for creative thinking CREATE and CRITIQUE that support the divergant and convergant creative process.
CREATE supports the divergant thinking process by expanding the original idea:
Combine: What else can we add to the idea to make it better or different? Reverse: What if we did the opposite of what we have generated so far? Expand: What if we made it longer or bigger? Adapt: What if we made some changes to some part of our idea? Trim: What if we make it shorter or remove something? Exchange: What if we sopped part of our idea with something else?
CRITIQUE supports the convergant thinking process by creating some decicion choices:
Credibility: How much does this idea have for us and other stakeholders? Resources: How much time, money and other resources will we require to put this into action? Interest: Why am I, the team, the business interested in carrying this idea forward? Time: What time frames are involved in develpping this idea? Information: What data and facts that we know apply to this idea? Qualifications: Who are the appropriate people to work on this? Understanding: What do we know about this idea? Effect: What result will this idea create for us?
I think these are great questions for supporting innovation but also for coaching in general. |

Winslow Reports partnership
After taking a run with the Winslow Reports System with Mike Eiseman of Eiseman Business Concepts (web), Andi Roberts has decided to create a Joint Venture Partnership to distribute and coach the Winslow Reports System with his clients.
The Winslow Reports system is a well researched and robust psychometric instrument that uncovers 24 personality & behaviour traits and can be used for selection and development in the organization.
The sytem provides three depths of survey and 4 types of reports for varying users of the system. The reports comply with USA law on selection.
The introduction of the Winslow Reports supports the other instruments that Andi Roberts already uses in psychometric and 360 feedback coaching.
More information will be placed in the Pyschometric coaching section shortly. |
